- Over 150bn authentications by April 2025; 2.21bn in August 2025 alone
What went wrong. Its use was challenged over privacy and exclusion; in 2018 India's Supreme Court upheld it but limited where it can be made mandatory.
The lesson. Keep a fallback for people whose authentication fails, and set legal limits on where the ID is required.

- 24.51bn transactions in August 2026
What went wrong. Volume has concentrated in a few private apps, which regulators have tried to address with proposed market-share caps.
The lesson. An open interface grows fast through private apps, but the rules on concentration need to come early.
